It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Estonian grand old man of modern pentathlon Hanno Selg (31.05.1932–02.10.2019). Hanno Selg passed away on Wednesday, 2 October 2019 at the age of 87 after a long and serious illness.
Hanno Selg was 1960 Rome Olympics silver medallist in modern pentathlon team event for the Soviet Union team. In the individual ranking of Rome Olympics, Hanno Selg secured tenth place.
During 1953–1965, he became champion of modern pentathlon of the Estonian SSR six times. In 1960, he was also crowned champion of the Soviet Union in the same sports.
During his career as an athlete, Hanno Selg was also engaged in fencing and skiing. In 1952, he won a silver medal in cross-country skiing relay 4x10 km and a bronze medal in slalom in Estonian Championships.
In 1965, he became Estonian champion in team épée.
Hanno Selg was voted Estonian athlete of the year in 1960; in 2010, he received an Honorary Decoration of the Estonian Olympic Committee.
